Rewind-Replay — November 2009

Exploratorium Celebrates Its 40 Year Music and Film History
Rewind Launches November 20, 2009
Replay Launches March 2010

Featuring Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Steve Reich and others circa 1980’s

In celebration of the Exploratorium’s 40th Anniversary, we have opened our archives to present Rewind, podcasts from our seminal Speaking of Music series. Speaking of Music was presented by the Exploratorium from 1977 to 1991. It was curated by Robin Kirck in its early years and then by Charles Amirkhanian from 1983-1991. It it, live conversation/performances with the leading contemporary composers, followed by audience-artist interactions, were heard live and also recorded. Artists like John Cage, Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Frank Zappa, Steve Reich, Trimpin and many others, whose reputations and stature have only grown over time, were captured in an earlier moment in their creative cycle. On November 20, the first four downloadable podcasts will be uploaded and then one podcast a month will be added for the entire 40th anniversary year, finishing up in November 2010.

Charles Amirkhanian, then with KPFA Radio, is now the founder and director of Other Minds.

Replay
March & April 2010

A 6-part series, Replay re-examines and contextualizes the Exploratorium’s 16mm film collection. Among the contemporary filmmakers who will guest curate are Bay Area filmmakers Bill Basquin, Sam Green, Melinda Stone, Marina McDougal, Nataljia Vekic and Christian Bruno. These filmmakers have had their work showcased at the Exploratorium and have had a long relationship over the course of the Cinema Art Program’s history. They will pair new contemporary films with the core archive of 16mm experimental, documentary, and science films from the Exploratorium collection in a “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction,” a play on one of the laws of thermodynamics. There will also be new scores composed for some of the silent films in the collection, which will be performed live.
