Iron Science Teacher

Don’t miss this wacky, science experiment cook-off, where teachers compete live at the Exploratorium and are simultaneously webcast around the world at www.exploratorium.edu/iron_science. Science teachers are given a secret ingredient and have ten minutes to concoct a science activity that can be used in the classroom. In an atmosphere where showmanship and creativity reign at a fast pace before a live audience, as many as fifteen teachers will compete for the title, “Iron Science Teacher. The Nobel Prize: 100 Years of Creativity

Every American child is taught to dream big — to become President, go for the gold, win the Nobel Prize. Premiering on the West Coast, this 5000-square-foot exhibition with Bay Area wide companion programs, some of which feature living Laureates, reveals an historic overview of the Nobel prize, first awarded in 1901. This exhibition is perfect for families, children and anyone who wants to know genius intimately and gain insight into the creative process. It is replete with the personal tools of prizewinners, multimedia, still and moving images of over fifty Laureates, and interactivity. This exhibition is included in the price of admission to the Exploratorium.

Fostering Creativity at Home: Science
Time: 10:30am – 12:30pm

Kids are always asking “why?,” so it’s no wonder that they make some of the best scientists. In this two-hour, interactive workshop, kids, parents, teachers and adults will learn how to foster an environment that nurtures the exploratory impulses, curiosity and sense of excitement and discovery in the children in their lives – with a frozen water balloon. Exploratorium Institute for Inquiry educators Fred Stein and Marilyn Austin will guide us through the process, using materials and tools that we all possess. For parents with children: Children will be allowed to participate in a “children-only” creative activity, facilitated by staff. The workshop runs concurrently to the parent workshop.
