Exploratorium After Dark — Resolution — January 2010
Exploratorium After Dark – Resolution
Cocktails, Conversation, and Adult-Oriented Programming
Thursday, January 7
6-10pm
Examine the role resolution plays in how we see, hear, taste, and feel, and how our minds synthesize sensations into a coherent (if sometimes
incorrect) understanding of the world. For one night only this After Dark event features a special installation of the Cubatron by Bay Area artist and engineer Mark Lottor. A visually stunning and surprising favorite of music and art festival audiences, the Cubatron is a 3D light sculpture made from 8×8 foot modular cubes, each containing 1000 individually programmable RGB LEDs. Viewed from any direction—even underneath—the Cubatron’s thousands of programmed pixels paint exquisite arrays of color that cascade in spectacularly dynamic patterns. It’s just one small part of Exploratorium After Dark – Resolution on Thursday evening, January 7, 6-10pm. This event is included in the price of admission to the Exploratorium. Or become an After Dark/Exploratorium member and receive admission to the whole season for under $25. To sign up for the Exploratorium’s After Dark email list and receive event details, contact afterdark@exploratorium.edu.
Telling things apart is the basis of perception, whether it relates to the sharpness of an image, the smoothness of a texture, or the saltiness of certain foods. Our abilities to discriminate between fine differences in information help us to navigate our environment. This evening, After Dark examines the role resolution plays. Explore perception exhibits from the Seeing and Mind collections, build pinhole cameras, experiment with illusions that alter your body’s spatial awareness, and offer activities such as taste tests, musical quizzes, and more.
Exploratorium After Dark is new extended evening hours on the first Thursday of every month at the Exploratorium that mix cocktails, conversation, and adult-oriented programming in science and the arts. Each night showcases a different theme, which might include live performances, films, and new media, or feature cutting-edge technology and unexpected extravaganzas. Programs are playful, unusual, and content-rich, and address the science behind topics of adult interest—from gambling, alcohol, fashion, and sex to extreme sports and gaming. Not a theater, a cabaret, or a gallery, Exploratorium After Dark involves aspects of all three, with a mood unlike anything else in the city. Where else can you find music, a cash bar, and an intellectually stimulating playground for adults—all with free parking?
